Common Signs of Addiction

Regardless of the substance, addicts often portray some of the same characteristics.

With any type of abuse, you might notice:

Mood Irregularities

Different drugs cause different reactions on a specific level, but if you know someone who shows drastic changes in their baseline mood, keep that in mind. Although everyone has good and bad days, major personality changes can be a sign of drug abuse.

Behavioral Changes

Although related to mood, behavioral changes also include a decrease or increase of sleeping, eating, or anger. If you see your friend or loved one become overly sad, angry, or agitated, this could be a sign of drug abuse, too.

Major Weight Loss

Rapid weight loss in combination with these other symptoms can often indicate a pattern of drug abuse or addiction.

Increase in Privacy

Whether they are lying or hiding items or facts, an increase in a need for privacy often indicates that there is something worth hiding. What are those things? Well, sometimes it can be a blossoming relationship or something along those lines, but it can also occur when someone becomes more involved in unhealthy behaviors or relationships.

Money Troubles

Occasional financial hold-ups aren't a big deal. Everyone has trouble with money sometimes, especially in this economy. But, it's a different story when someone goes from financial highs and lows or constantly asks for large amounts of money for inconsistent reasons (constant "car problems," or "no shifts at work," etc.).

Drug Paraphernalia

Although not all of these items are necessarily signs of drug use, they can show major changes in a person's life. These may include:

  • Foil wrappers,
  • Lighters,
  • Pipes,
  • Really small plastic bags,
  • Weighing scales, or
  • rolling papers.
Naturally, not all of these indicate a drug problem on their own, but taken together, they can be quite an issue. Always be respectful of someone's privacy, but do keep an eye out if you're truly concerned that this could be a pattern of abuse.
